Need your opinion, Internets!

We've been in our current house for a little over 4 years. The walls are all still the same neutral tan color throughout the entire house as they were when we purchased it. We've furnished it and hung pictures, etc., but have not changed any colors. I know, being a Realtor, that "neutrals sell" and lots of colors translate into lots of work for a potential buyer.

But here's the deal...we're not selling and we don't have plans to sell in the near future. It's time to add some color and interest back into our surroundings. So, I've been thinking for some time now that the Dining Room is where I want to start. All of our furnishings and accessories are dark neutral colors--olives, tans, browns, plums, etc.

I want to do this mural in the dining room with maybe the additional walls being a dark olive or a gold-ish color...

(Here's the entire mural)

(Here's a sample of how it looks in a room)

Now, be honest! Tell me what you think of this Tuscan countryside mural. I've told hubby it's all I want for my birthday---to have the dining room done!

Truly a beautiful scene. It sounds like your wall color choices would definitely compliment it!

If you want a mural then you should have it - provided it is well done. There is nothing more hokey than a mural that is amateurish. And yes, if you are not selling anytime soon, get some color on those beige walls. Life is too short to settle for beige.

I love it. I'd do the other walls in the dark-olive green.

I love Tuscany... this is a beautiful scene.
Why not put it in a HUGE frame? You can always take it down if you're tired of it.
I have red walls in the living room that I love...I guess we will need to paint it when we get ready to sell.

I love that mural...and it should look fab with either of your color choices...depending on the texture of your walls...you could go with a lighter tan (possibly even the color that is on them now) and do a glaze over that...use the olive or gold/brownish color...mix 3 parts glaze to 1 part paint...then paint on in sections being careful to start at a corner (I usually start in an area that is a small wall..to get the feel...or you can practice inside a closet...but I tape everything off that I don't want painted...then I start in the corner painting probably a 3 to 4 foot wide section top to bottom, then I use my rag to rub in and wipe off... then leaving the last say 5 to 6inches still wet w/paint (don't rub this in) I start the same process over again...starting at the beginning of the 5 to 6 inch section...then paint on another 3 to 4 feet...wipe...then continue down the wall till you come to the corner...also I keep a spray water bottle on hand just in case the areas start drying out too soon...then you can just mist it...and it should be fine...)...and not to let the paint dry in between applications...the glaze will keep your paint "wetter" longer...so paint it on...then with a slightly damp rag..(I use old tee shirts and lots of them) and wipe it off...smear it in...till you have acheived the look you want...make sure you leave the edge of each area wet so when you move down the wall you can just put more wet paint over that area...while moving down the wall...and just continue the wiping method...I like this method b/c it allows you to really get the paint in the grooves, nooks and crannies...also if you have to stop painting for any reason...make sure you stop ONLY at a corner...that way when you start back up you won't have a big line where you stopped and started...it will be in the corner and won't be noticeable...does any of this make sense...wish I lived closer...I would come over and help...but I'm sure you may already know all this...if not feel free to email me or go to my blog and ask away...This look is kind of an old Tuscan stone wall look...if you know what I mean...not really stones...but an old wall looking treatment!
SORRY THIS IS SO LENGTHY!!

Good Luck...I think it will look GREAT...and what a great gift idea!!

Blessings...

I think this would make a perfect gift. And you can tell Hubby I said so!

Tracey...
You mentioned the wall technique in the picture of my heading...I think the technique I was telling you about is very similar if not the same...it really just depends on your wall texture (that wall was kind of a flat trowelled on texture...not sprayed on then dragged...that's called splatter drag) AND the paint combinations...I would think on the little bit I can see...they probably used a lighter green base...then glazed with a darker green...maybe moss...then may have hit it with some brown/umber/or bronze...the best thing you can do...is practice on an area that is not visible...I have often practiced on the colors needed by applying the technique to poster board...you won't get the textured look...but you can play w/your color combinations...cut the poster board in halfs/quarters...practice several color schemes/techiques...then tack them on the wall...live with it for a bit...then decide which one you like best...they do change colors on you based on the lighting in the room and time of day...I REALLY wish I did live closer...cos I would love to help you...my friend and I use to do this all the time...but we've been busy lately doing weddings and such...but we will be renovating...so I'm sure I'll be doing something similar...soon...plus I am going to Colorado in September to help my daughter and son-in-law get some painting...renovating done on their new house...not sure if she will let me do this type of technique...she's more of a Pottery Barn gal...but she has impecable taste...and is great w/color!!

Good Luck!

Tell the Chrome-Dome to get you that mural! It's beautiful! However, I must ask...how does one go about buying a mural? I never knew you could put one on your birthday list!

That is absolutely gorgeous. If you are not selling go for the color and enjoy it.

It's really pretty, Tracey. so, I can't wait to see what you do. I've been to Italy...beautiful, beautiful place! I just hope you don't get tired of it. Do you actually wallpaper it to the wall?? That would be my only concern...a few years down the road, what happens when the Tuscan thing gets a little old.

Dark gold or olive green would be pretty. I have lots of good paint colors to share if you need them.

Oh it looks absolutely beautiful! I agree with what's already been written.

I want to add, that I think it's time to put down some roots (color) in this house. It's time to really make it your own.

Oh and don't forget to take your own pictures, too.

What a GRAND gift! It's gorgeous! It would really go well with a paint finish that had texture to it...it could be an entire "tuscan" package! I highly recommend textured paint on the other walls. Ooh..happy birthday to you!
