I'd like to thank the Academy...

During the Blog Party, my friend, Lisa, over at the Preacher's Wife hosted a little competition to see who could confess their biggest "loser mom" story and be inducted into the Loser Mom Club. Her kids were doing the voting and it seems I won!

I've waited for this moment my whole life. When I first was given the script, I wasn't sure it was something I wanted to do, but then the whole "motherhood" role was speaking to me and I knew that I wanted to accept the challenge. Many other moms were after this role, knowing that it could win them this award, but I knew that if I gave it my all, really committed myself to the task that I would be standing here giving this speech as the biggest loser mom. I'm so honored that you've chosen me. I'd like to thank God, for protecting my child when I didn't have the sense to do so myself; my adorable son, who felt that seeing Mickey was more important than any pain from a broken arm; my wonderful husband, who at the time, wasn't my husband, but I'm sure would have supported me fully; my mother, my co-conspirator; the wonderful staff at Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia; and last, but not least, the academy.

Without all of you, there would have been no story to tell.

Move over chickies…I can SOOOOOOOOO win the biggest loser mom!!!

When my son, Zack, was in the 3rd grade, we had planned a trip to Disney World over Spring Break. He was so excited that he talked about it for days and we had to do the “day countdown” to departure! The last day of school before Spring Break (the day before we were supposed to leave), Zack fell off this 4 ft. wall on the playground. When I picked him up from school, the teacher had an ice bag on his elbow and said that it looked pretty bruised, but she didn’t think it was broken. I wanted to take him to the doctor to make sure, but he was so afraid that this “mishap” was going to prevent us from going to Disney that he kept saying, “I’m okay! I’m okay! See, I can bend it!” All the while biting his lip in pain.

I decided to take him by my parents doctor’s office since the pediatrician was almost impossible to get in to see at a moment’s notice. Now I believe Methuselah had nothing on this guy! Old, decrepid (sp?) and hadn’t cracked a medical book since the First Editions that were sitting on his shelves! He took a look at it, bent Zack’s arm a time or two and said, “he’s fine. Wrap an Ace bandage around it.” WHAT? An Ace bandage? You’re kidding me, right?

So, Ace bandage and luggage…Disney World…here we come! One little problem…each day it became more and more swollen, purple, blue and a very odd shade of black. Then it got to the point where he could not straighten it at all!

“Come on, mommy, let’s go one more time on Space Mountain!!! Mad Hatter’s teacups…let’s spin faster!!! I’m okay, I’m okay!!! Really!!!”

So for 5 days were wore out all the Disney Theme Parks. When arriving back in Atlanta, I decided we would stop by Egleston Children’s Hospital and take one more look at his arm. You guessed it…BROKEN!

Yes, I dragged my child around Disney for 5 days with a broken arm. No need to call D-FACS (Department of Family and Children’s Services)….I’ll just drive there and turn myself in.

Oh, this is almost identical to an experience I had when our son was around 18 months. We decided to spend a day at Disneyland, and he fell in the motel room (off the bed, onto a rock-hard floor). Didn't cry, and he looked ok. The next day he started shrieking in his stroller whenever I touched him. Took him to the hospital, and one x-ray later, they discovered a broken collarbone.

What IS it with Disneyland and broken bones?

Yelp, you've got company here too. When Anthony was in 3rd grade he came home from a roller skating party with a BIG bump on his arm. We put ice on it, at school the next day they wrapped an ace bandage on it, the second evening it hurt worse, and finally the next morning I sent him to school again in great pain, but called the doctor for an appt. As we waited in the waiting room, I was so afraid we would spend money on xrays unnecessarily (money was very tight). He said, "Well, I DID take my spelling test with that hand." I just KNEW this was going to be wasted money. But, you guessed it - it was indeed broken, and I felt very much like a loser mother.

Congratulations...I guess! You'll go all out to win an award, right?, even admitting you're not perfect. HA!

As Moms, it's never easy knowing just what to do and sometimes we're not perfect (but neither was our Moms or their Moms or their Moms Mom).

We had a similar experience where our son fell off the chair lift skiing on Christmas Day. About 5 days later we took him in, and sure enough ... he had a broken bone! LOL! Funny, now, but not then.
Thanks for letting me visit! :)

Yes, you got the award fair and square! Once when holding my youngest son's hand, walking out of church,I pulled him to come around to my side of the double door(bar in the middle).Instead I pulled him into the bar and ended up havin stiches on the forehead. Of course when anyone asked what happened...it was always,"Mommy pushed me on the door!" Lots of 'splainin' to do. :)

Sometimes it's amazing that they "do" get raised, isn't it?? Great story...and congrats on your win. I've not had the broken arm thing...but know that there are many many stories where I "felt" like a total loser Mom.

Blessings.

:-) Susan

Hi, Tracey/realestate girl - I am a realtor, too! Well, now I know I am not alone in the world as a mean, heartless Mom. When my daughter was about 9 she was taking a riding lesson on her horse and fell off going over a jump. I yelled at her from the fence "Get up and get your horse!" Well, of course, it turned out to be a broken arm and I felt awful for not running to her aid.
P.S. How's real estate there?

Ok- Can I say, yep, I think you earned this one. :>) We have all done something stupid- or will eventually!

And I used to work for DFACS! Yes I did.

I came over to say that I would love for you to link to me and the "tears in a bottle" is one of my fav. verses- Psalms 56:8.

Blessings!
